Akenhead Aims For First WPT Final Table

After just two days of poker at the World Poker Tour’s Venice Grand Prix, the field is already down to 27 players and the final table is soon to be announced.

The second day of action in Venice saw the field shrink from 89 players to the final 27.

The top 18 finishers in the event will make the money, with the winner taking home €229,800.  That payday also includes the $25,500 WPT World Championship seat.

With a turnout of just 155 players compared to 523 in last year’s event , this is one of the smallest prize pools of WPT Season X and the smallest first place prize pool of a WPT event being televised in the US since Season 1.

Filippo Candio began Day 2 at the top of the counts, but he failed to survive to the end of the day. Several other notables like Mike Sexton, Roberto Romanello, Guillaume Darcourt, Tony Guoga, Melanie Weisner, Nicolas Levi, and Max Pescatori also busted out over the course of the day.

James Akenhead is near the front of the pack as well with 336,000.  He is easily the most recognizable pro left in the field and has plenty of experience in major events on his side. The other big name in the final 27, Kara Scott, has plenty of experience as well, but the PartyPoker pro doesn’t have a ton of chips to work with, ending Day 2 with a below-average 60,100.

Here are the top ten chip counts from the end of Day 2 of the WPT Venice Grand Prix:

1. Marcel Bjerkmann – 436,300
2. Marko Neumann – 384,400
3. Jason Wheeler – 348,200
4. James Akenhead – 336,000
5. Andrey Gulyy – 326,000
6. Gianluca Trebbi – 323,500
7. Andrea Dato – 309,900
8. Gabriele Lepore – 233,200
9. Jeremie Sochet – 232,500
10. Alessandro Longobardi – 221,200
